Acts 1:8-4-11

THE PROMISE”

Last week I preached on God sending our Advocate when we believe.

“But ye shall receive power.…”

Before Christ ascended, He told the disciples to wait until they were filled with power.Luke 24:48–49 “48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

A. Power to worship, part of this Holy Spirit is that we have the power to pray, to worship God our Father. John 2:23–24 “23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men,” This Spirit always helps us to pray.

Romans 8:26 “26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

So here we read and are assured that God through His Holy Spirit is blessing us with success, if we give the Holy Spirit all things, needs, praises, thanksgivings, worries, anxieties........

B. We are promised to have, to start, to depend on God’s Holy Spirit to WITNESS!!!!!!!!!, We now have the Power to witness. Peter now is a new man.

New Living Translation (Chapter 2) Peter Preaches to the Crowd “14 Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this. 15 These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that. 16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:17 ‘In the last days,’ God says,‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.Your sons and daughters will prophesy.Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.18 In those days I will pour out my Spiriteven on my servants—men and women alike—”

C. Will we begin using the Holy Spirit for Power to do or even begin God’s work? . Zechariah 4:5–6 “5 Then the angel who talked with me answered and said to me, “Do you not know what these are?” And I said, “No, my lord.” 6 So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts. We all, you all, must Let the Spirit work through you.

II. THE PLAN, God’s Plan

“… After the Holy Ghost is come upon you.…” you must put into action God’s plan, His gift of the Holy Spirit to begin using your gift, you need to pray and pursue what your gifts are and start doing them. This is when the great joy begins, doing and using your gift.

A. Let’s focus on the Purpose of the Holy Spirit for a few minutes.

1. The Holy Spirit Convicts us of sin, makes us aware of sin, gets our attention even if we think of sinning......

John 16:7–9 “7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me;”

2. God’s plan with and through the Holy Spirit Confirms our salvation.

Romans 8:15–16 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,”

3. God’s Holy Spirit is with us to Comfort Christians, you and I.

4. Has God’s Holy Spirit ever enable you to Control your thoughts, your actions, your desires? Paul tells us in the book of Galations:

Galatians 5:15–17 “15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another! 16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

III. THE POWER

“… And ye shall be witnesses unto me.…”Witness means to give proof of something.

A. Proof of His saving power—1 Tim. 1:15. Paul, the persecutor (Acts 8:1–3), now meets with Christ (Acts 9:1–20). From a persecutor to a preacher.

B. Proof of His sustaining power—Acts 20:24. Nothing kept Paul from serving Christ. Look at his testimony at the end of his life (2 Tim. 4:6–8). The Holy Spirit helped him.

C. Proof of His satisfying power—Phil. 4:7. He is able to give us peace at all times.

D. Proof of His sanctifying power—2 Cor. 5:17. Only Christ can cleanse us from all sin (John 3:1–8; 14:6).

IV. THE PLACE, we are instructed, guided, told what to do with the Holy Spirit. GO TELL OTHERS ABOUT JESUS

A. Jerusalem—hometown area. Spread the gospel.

B. Judea—home state. Spread the gospel to all in your state.

C. Samaria—the nation.

D. Uttermost parts—foreign missions, everywhere.

Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creatures.

Mark 16:14–16 “14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
